Coyhaique is a zone in the Chilean Patagonia replete with world-renowned fishing thanks to the extensive variety of pristine water sources found in this region. In this area, fishing is possible in all types of bodies of water, from tiny streams in the prairie (spring creeks), to large rivers and lakes. Our programs provide access to privileged bodies of water, transporting visitors to the best places in the zone

This fantastic program in Coyhaique called the Pampa a la Selva unites the best and most diverse private spots in the area

The expedition starts with a few days in the Estancia del Zorro, located in the highest mountains of Coyhaique, bordering Argentina, approximately 25 miles from Coyhaique. This fabulous estate, sitting on almost 15,000 acres, is home to the red fox and a large number of condors, flamingos, and other wild birds, in addition to undiscovered brown trout, which inhabit the private streams and spring creeks of the Estancia del Zorro.

Fishing is all done wading, in private waters, and exploring canyons, mountains, and the fantastic prairie rivers. Fishermen immerse in the deep solitude of nature, accompanied by experienced guides.

Captures of trophy brown trout up to 13 pounds and technical fishing with dry flies and streamers are a welcome challenge for every angler.

In addition to fishing brown trout native to the Estancia del Zorro in Chile, visitors have access to fishing rainbow trout on an estate in Argentina and private admission to various rivers: Mayo, Ñirihuao, Pedregozo, Zorro, and Norte, among others.

The expedition continues with several days at the Cinco Rios Lodge, located in the heart of the Chilean Patagonia, only 10 minutes away from Coyhaique, on the banks of the Simpson River.

The word “variety” best characterizes the fishing in this zone. Within an hour and a half drive, in trucks with 4-wheel drive, visitors arrive at the top fishing places in the region: rivers Simpson, Paloma, Mañihuales, Aysen, Emperador Guillermo, and Azul Lake; the operation relies on motor boats to bring fishermen to these exclusive spots.

Fishing can be done from the boat and by wading, depending on the destination and section of the chosen river for every day of fishing.

The primary species in the zone include rainbow trout, brown trout, Chinook salmon, and Salar salmon.

Lodging

In the Estancia del Zorro, guests find themselves on an estate with more than 100 years of history and ranching tradition, on which sits a large, old house remodeled with all the comforts fishermen and their families require. Guests are welcomed into a warm, family-friendly environment, with delicious food typical of the area and many fun activities for the entire family.

The house has accommodations for 12 people, with spacious and comfortable rooms and beds, completely heated.

Cinco Rios Lodge is made from the high-quality wood of the surrounding forests, located on the banks of the Simpson River. It offers superior comfort to its guests and an exclusive view of the valley and the towering, snowy peaks of the Andes of the Chilean Patagonia.

The lodge, which is completely heated, has accommodations for 12 guests, in addition to a FlyShop, a space for tying flies, and gourmet food from the zone, all resulting in an unforgettable stay.

Equipment

In this zone, #5 or #6 rods are recommended, of medium-fast or fast action, with the purpose of fighting the wind. Fishing is done with floating lines for some fish that are visible, with an emphasis on dry fly fishing. Fishermen should also have fast-sinking lines on hand. Recommended floating lines are WF, which allow fishermen to better tackle various fishing conditions; for example, casting large imitation flies and streamers in shallow water. For streamer fanatics, we recommend using a #7 or #8 rod.

In the spring creeks of Zorro, leaders 0x or 1x are normally used, depending on the wind conditions.

Regarding the flies, for this zone the use of imitation flies is recommended, such as the famous “Fat Albert” and other similar patterns. For more information, we send participants a list of recommended patterns.

Expedition specifics

To arrive in Coyhaique, you must first take one of several periodic flights from Santiago. One direct flight takes 2 hours and 20 minutes and arrives at the Balmaceda airport, a 1 hour and 45-minute drive from the estate.

The spring creeks lie a short distance from the ranch.

The fishing season in Coyhaique starts the second Friday in October and finishes at the beginning of May the following year.

The itinerary for a typical day of fishing starts with a breakfast buffet in the house or lodge beginning at 7:00 a.m., and departure between 8:00 and 8:30 a.m. We fish until we decide to take a break and return to the estate for lunch and a good glass of Chilean wine, or we eat lunch at the river if our destination for the day is a bit farther from the estate. The fishing ends at around 7:00 p.m., and we return to the lodge, where a delicious meal and pisco sour await us to close out the day. The farewell on the final day always includes a traditional lamb roast.
