The south of Chile’s Third Region is home to exceptional, extensive beaches, calm waters, and a variety of fish exclusive to the area.

Our expeditions bring fishermen on an adventure across the diverse beaches of these coasts, in search of the best places to fish.

Expert guides with extensive experience accompany participants at all times and share their unique knowledge of the techniques of sport fishing.

We visit places few people travel, including the Humbolt National Penguin Reserve and Chañaral Island Marine Reserve in front of the cove.

Fishing is centered on catching two principal species, the sole “Paralichthys microps” and the Chilean sea bass “Cilus gilberti.” The two species frequent the same feeding zone, beach shores and rocky areas. Both are predators of small fish and crustaceans, which are found near sandy beaches or stretches of rockier beaches; the tangle of the tide is the ideal area to feed. The sole is a more stationary fish, while the Chilean sea bass is migratory and moves through diverse waters in search of its food. We fish with diverse types of lures, which convincingly imitate the species’ victims, in order to trick our prey.

The fishing areas depend on the present conditions. They will be chosen from 3 larger zones:

--Beaches south of the cove, between Chañaral Cove and Punta de Choros (Mamani, Apolillado, Ventana, etc.)

--Large beaches south of Punta de Choros

--Large beaches north of Chañaral Cove (Playa Roja and others)

Every zone presents unique characteristics of fishing and geography, which means we always have the opportunity to find a beach with acceptable conditions for fishing from the shore. As an alternative, program offers small coves and rocky beaches, which provide a good option for catching native fish or those with other eating habits.

Our fishing programs include exclusive lodging in the “El Español“ Cabañas, situated in front of the ocean in the beautiful cove of Chañaral de Aceituno. These cabañas combine rustic yet comfortable rooms with excellent service and plenty of hospitality, each attended by its own proprietor.

Expedition specifics

Chañaral de Aceituno, in Northern Chile’s Third Region of Atacama, lies 6 hours north of the city of Viña del Mar by car. A 1-hour flight can be taken from Santiago to the city of La Serena, which is followed by a 1.5-hour drive to the final destination.

All fishing spots are within a 30-minute to one-hour radius.

The fishing season is year-round; however, the best months are September through March. There is a ban on Chilean sea bass fishing in October and November, so all fish of this species must be released during that time.

Accommodations are in the “El Español” Cabañas, which have a rustic ambiance and are situated next to the ocean, each with a 5-person capacity.
