The word “variety” best characterizes the fishing in this zone. Within an hour and a half drive, visitors can access the top fishing places in the region. The best season for fishing in the rivers starts at the beginning of December when the rivers start to reach their optimum levels of clarity and quantity of water.

Fishing can be done from the boat and by wading, depending on the destination and section of the chosen river for each day of fishing.

The primary species in the zone include rainbow trout, brown trout, Chinook salmon, and Salar salmon.

·         Fishing program around Coyhaique, Cerro Castillo (paradise for fly fishing with beetles) and can include a special program on the majestic, turbulent Baker River.

·         For fanatics of big brown trout during their spawning, we present the best destinations for the end of the season: Chile Chico and General Carrera.

Lodging

Our fishing programs include accommodations in the lodge Patagonia House, a small, exclusive boutique hotel situated in the vicinity of the city of Coyhaique’s Divisadero mountain. The hotel combines luxurious rooms with excellent service, delicious food, and plenty of hospitality.

Equipment

For this zone, #5 or #6 rods are recommended, medium-fast or fast action, with the purpose of fighting the wind. Fishing is done primarily with floating lines, emphasizing catching visible fish with a dry fly. Fishermen should also have fast-sinking lines on hand. Recommended floating lines are WF, which allow fishermen to better tackle various fishing conditions; for example, casting large imitation flies. For streamer fanatics, we recommend using a #7 rod.

Regarding the flies, for this zone the use of imitation flies is recommended, such as the famous “Fat Albert” and other similar patterns. For more information, we send participants a list of recommended patterns

Expedition specifics

To arrive in Coyhaique, you must first take one of several flights that leave periodically from Santiago. One direct flight takes 2 hours and 20 minutes and arrives at the Balmaceda airport, a 45-minute drive from Hotel Patagonia House, on the city’s border.

The daily fishing transfers take about 45 minutes on average, depending on the specific location for the day.

The fishing season in Coyhaique starts at the beginning of October and finishes at the beginning of May the following year.

The itinerary for a typical day of fishing starts with a breakfast buffet in the hotel beginning at 7:00 a.m., and departure between 8:00 and 8:30 a.m. We fish until we decide to take a break for lunch and enjoy a good glass of Chilean wine on the banks of the river. The fishing ends at around 7:00 p.m., and we return to the hotel, where a delicious meal and pisco sour await us to close out the day.
